Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup shortening or butter, softened
- 3/4 cup milk, or as needed
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the shortening or butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the milk, mixing until a soft dough forms. Add more milk if necessary.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for a minute.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape each into a ball.
- Flatten each ball into a 4-inch disc.
- Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat.
- Carefully place 2-3 gorditas in the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan.
- Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown and puffed.
- Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
- Serve warm.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can use butter instead of shortening.
- Adjust the amount of milk to achieve the desired dough consistency.
- Do not overheat the oil, as this can cause the gorditas to burn before cooking through.
