- 1 teaspoon baking powder

- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine masa harina, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add warm water and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough for 2-3 minutes until smooth.
- Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each into a ball.
- Flatten each ball into a disc about 1/4 inch thick.
- Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Fry the gorditas for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown and puffed.
- Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.

- Fry in batches to avoid overcrowding the skillet.
