Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, oil, egg, and vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Carefully stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  7. Sprinkle chocolate chips over the top, if using.
