Description
A simple recipe for classic shepherd’s pie made with ground beef and topped with mashed potatoes.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 1.5 pounds ground beef
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and quartered
- 1/4 cup milk
- 4 tablespoons butter
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Boil potatoes in salted water until tender. Drain, then mash with milk and butter. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion, carrots, and celery. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Stir in flour, then add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Bring to a simmer and cook until the sauce thickens slightly, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in frozen peas. Season the meat mixture with salt and pepper. Pour the mixture into a 9-inch baking dish.
- Spoon the mashed potatoes evenly over the meat mixture. Use a fork to create texture on top.
- Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes, or until the topping is lightly browned and the filling is bubbling.
Notes
- You can substitute sweet potatoes for regular potatoes for a different flavor.
- For a richer flavor, add 1/2 cup of red wine with the beef broth.
