Description

Classic Salisbury steak with garlic mashed potatoes and a rich mushroom and onion gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, milk, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix well and form into four oval patties.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side, until browned. Remove patties from skillet and set aside.
  3. Add sliced onion and mushrooms to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together beef broth and flour until smooth. Pour into the skillet with the vegetables.
  5. Bring the gravy to a simmer, stirring constantly, until thickened.
  6. Return the patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over them. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until cooked through.
  7. While the Salisbury steak is simmering, boil potatoes in a large pot of salted water until tender. Drain.
  8. Mash potatoes with milk and butter until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
  9. Serve Salisbury steak with gravy over garlic mashed potatoes.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for ground beef.
  • Add other vegetables to the gravy, such as peas or carrots.
  • For a thicker gravy, add more flour. For a thinner gravy, add more beef broth.
