Classic patty melts with a flavorful secret sauce.


Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Make the secret sauce: In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, white vinegar, sugar, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
  2. Form the patties: Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions. Form each portion into a patty about 1/2 inch thick. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  3. Cook the onions: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Remove onions from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Cook the patties: Increase the heat to medium-high. Add the patties to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until desired doneness. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  5. Assemble the melts: Spread secret sauce on one side of each slice of rye bread. Place 4 slices of bread, sauce-side up, in the skillet. Top each with a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked patty, a portion of the caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices, sauce-side down.
  6. Grill the melts: Cook the melts over medium heat for 3-4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Serve immediately.
