Ingredients

  • 1 loaf (13 to 16 ounces) French bread, challah, or brioche
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries

Instructions

  1. Slice the bread into 1-inch thick slices. Arrange the slices in a single layer in a buttered 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  3. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices.
  4. Sprinkle the blueberries over the top of the bread.
  5. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes.
  8. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed up.
  9. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm with maple syrup, if desired.
