A rich and decadent lasagna with multiple layers of cheese and meat sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 (28 ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 2 tablespoons dried basil
  • 2 tablespoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 pound lasagna noodles
  • 1 (15 ounce) container ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage over medium heat. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot and cook until softened.
  3. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, red wine, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and fresh parsley.
  6. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  7. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  8. Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of the baking dish.
  9. Layer with a single layer of cooked lasagna noodles.
  10. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles.
  11. Sprinkle with one-third of the mozzarella cheese.
  12. Repeat the layers: meat sauce, noodles, remaining ricotta mixture, and another third of the mozzarella cheese.
  13. Top with a final layer of noodles, remaining meat sauce, and the rest of the mozzarella cheese and Parmesan cheese.
  14. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  15. Remove foil and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, or until bubbly and browned.
  16. Let stand for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can make the meat sauce ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator or freezer.
  • For a spicier lasagna, add red pepper flakes to the meat sauce.
  • You can use no-boil lasagna noodles if you prefer. Follow package directions for assembly and baking time.
