Description

Homemade donuts with a sweet maple glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • For the glaze: 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in the remaining sugar, melted butter, salt, vanilla extract, and eggs.
  3. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  6. Cut out donuts using a donut cutter or two different sized round cutters. Place donuts on parchment-lined baking sheets.
  7. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Fry donuts in batches for 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  10. While donuts are cooling, prepare the glaze: Whisk together powdered sugar, maple syrup, melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  11. Dip each cooled donut into the glaze, letting excess drip off. Place on a wire rack to set.

Notes

  • For a richer glaze, use heavy cream instead of milk.
  • Ensure oil temperature is consistent for even cooking.
  • Donuts are best enjoyed fresh.
