- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
- 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup diced cooked ham
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and turn it onto a lightly floured surface.
- Roll the dough into a 12×18 inch rectangle.
- Sprinkle shredded cheese and diced ham evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border on one long side.
- Roll up the dough tightly from the long side opposite the border. Pinch the seam to seal.
- Carefully form the roll into a ring, pressing the ends together to seal.
- Place the ring on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Brush the top of the ring with the beaten egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds, if desired.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Let cool slightly before slicing and serving.
Notes
- You can substitute other cheeses like Swiss or Monterey Jack.
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of black pepper to the cheese and ham mixture.
- Ensure the warm water is not too hot, as it can kill the yeast.
