Description

A savory ring bread filled with ham and cheese, perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a light meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup diced cooked ham
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and turn it onto a lightly floured surface.
  6. Roll the dough into a 12×18 inch rectangle.
  7. Sprinkle shredded cheese and diced ham evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border on one long side.
  8. Roll up the dough tightly from the long side opposite the border. Pinch the seam to seal.
  9. Carefully form the roll into a ring, pressing the ends together to seal.
  10. Place the ring on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  11. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  12. Brush the top of the ring with the beaten egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds, if desired.
  13. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  14. Let cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute other cheeses like Swiss or Monterey Jack.
  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of black pepper to the cheese and ham mixture.
  • Ensure the warm water is not too hot, as it can kill the yeast.
