Description

A soft and airy doughnut recipe perfect for holiday celebrations. These doughnuts are fried to golden perfection and coated in a simple sweet glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (105-115°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar, plus a pinch
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • For the Glaze:
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, a pinch of sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in the remaining granulated sugar, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  3. Add salt and gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down dough and roll it out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  7. Cut out doughnuts using a doughnut cutter or two round cutters of different sizes.
  8. Place doughnuts on parchment-lined baking sheets, cover, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  9. Heat about 3 inches of vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F.
  10. Fry doughnuts in batches for 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  11. Remove doughnuts with a slotted spoon and place on a wire rack to cool slightly.
  12. For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  13. Dip the tops of the cooled doughnuts into the glaze. Let the glaze set.

Notes

  • Ensure milk is warm but not hot, as this can kill the yeast.
  • Dough should be slightly sticky; add flour sparingly.
  • Do not overcrowd the pot when frying.
  • Adjust glaze consistency with more powdered sugar or milk as needed.
