Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the softened butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the batter in half. To one half, add the orange juice and orange zest. Mix until smooth.
- Pour the vanilla batter into one prepared cake pan and the orange batter into the other.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat the softened butter until creamy.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with the milk, beating until smooth and fluffy.
- Stir in the vanilla extract and orange extract. If desired, add a drop of orange food coloring for a more vibrant look.
- Frost the cooled cakes, layering them with the orange and vanilla frosting for a swirled effect.
