Description

Classic Homemade Doughnuts are fluffy, golden, and dusted with powdered sugar. A nostalgic, easy-to-make treat perfect for any day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 3/4 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for dusting)
  • Neutral oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or sunflower oil – about 4 cups)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, add warm milk and sprinkle the yeast over it. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Whisk in sugar, melted butter, salt, and egg until smooth.
  3. Gradually mix in flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
  4. Knead dough on a floured surface for about 5–7 minutes, or use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 4–5 minutes.
  5. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and roll out to 1/2-inch thickness on a floured surface.
  7. Cut dough into doughnut shapes using a doughnut cutter or two round cutters.
  8. Place shaped doughnuts on a lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise for 15–20 minutes.
  9. Heat oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry 2–3 doughnuts at a time for about 1 minute per side, until golden brown.
  10. Transfer to a paper towel-lined tray to drain excess oil.
  11. While warm, dust doughnuts with powdered sugar using a fine mesh sieve.

Notes

  • Make sure the oil stays at a consistent 350°F for best results.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pot while frying to maintain oil temperature.
  • You can substitute whole milk with oat or almond milk.
  • Use a thermometer for accurate frying temperature.
  • Store cooled doughnuts in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • Freeze unfrosted doughnuts and glaze them after reheating.
