Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Reserve 1 1/2 cups of the dough for the topping. Press the remaining dough evenly into the prepared baking pan.
  7. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the dough in the pan.
  8. Crumble the reserved dough over the chocolate chips.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  10. Let cool completely in the pan before cutting into bars.

Notes

  • For a richer chocolate flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
  • You can substitute milk chocolate chips or white chocolate chips for the semi-sweet.
  • Store bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
