  • Author: memorecipes
  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This Chinese Orange Sauce is sweet, tangy, and packed with real citrus flavor. Made in just 15 minutes with fresh orange juice, garlic, and ginger, it’s the perfect homemade alternative to takeout sauces. Drizzle it over crispy chicken, stir-fried veggies, or noodles for a quick burst of flavor. Make a batch and keep it in the fridge—you’ll want to put it on everything!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice (about 23 oranges)

  • ½ cup soy sauce

  • ¼ cup rice vinegar

  • ¼ cup sugar

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

  • 2 tablespoons water

  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger

  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon orange zest (optional)

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk together orange juice, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, and sesame oil. Bring to a simmer.

  • In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and water to make a slurry. Slowly whisk the slurry into the simmering sauce.

  • Cook and stir for 3–5 minutes, until the sauce thickens.

  • Add grated ginger, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using). Simmer for 2 more minutes.

  • Taste and adjust seasoning with more sugar, vinegar, or orange zest as desired.

  • Remove from heat, cool slightly, and serve over your favorite dishes.

Notes

  • Fresh orange juice is highly recommended for the brightest flavor.

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.

  • Reheat gently and stir in a splash of water if it becomes too thick.

  • Use tamari for a gluten-free version.

  • Add sriracha or chili garlic paste if you like more heat.
