Description

A comforting and decadent southern classic, these buttermilk biscuits are served with a rich, homemade chocolate gravy. Perfect for holiday breakfasts or brunches.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Gradually add the cold buttermilk, stirring until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a 3/4-inch thick disc.
  6. Cut out biscuits using a biscuit cutter or a glass rim. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  8. While the biscuits bake, prepare the chocolate gravy. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and flour.
  9. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth.
  10. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  11. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  12. Serve the warm biscuits topped with the chocolate gravy.

Notes

  • For flakier biscuits, ensure your butter and buttermilk are very cold.
  • You can adjust the sweetness of the chocolate gravy by adding more or less sugar.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make a substitute by mixing 3/4 cup milk with 3/4 tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar and letting it sit for 5 minutes.
