- 5 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 4 cups whole milk
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly.
- Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, garlic powder, and nutmeg.
- Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
- Pour half of the sauce over the potatoes.
- Sprinkle with half of the shredded cheeses.
- Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, sauce, and cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake for another 20-30 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and top is golden brown.
- Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- For best results, slice potatoes uniformly thin.
- You can substitute other cheeses like Monterey Jack or fontina.
- Add cooked bacon or ham for extra flavor.
