Description

A classic baked ziti recipe featuring a rich tomato sauce and a blend of three cheeses.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ziti pasta
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Cook ziti pasta according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  4. Add chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  5. Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, beaten egg, and 1/4 cup of the Parmesan cheese. Mix well.
  7. In a large bowl, combine the cooked ziti, tomato sauce mixture, and ricotta mixture. Stir gently to combine.
  8. Spread half of the ziti mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle with 1 cup of mozzarella cheese.
  9. Top with the remaining ziti mixture. Sprinkle with the remaining 1 cup of mozzarella cheese and the remaining 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  11. Let stand for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a spicier sauce, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the tomato sauce.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or Italian sausage for the ground beef.
  • If you don’t have ziti, penne or rigatoni pasta will also work.
