Description
A warm and satisfying breakfast bowl featuring cooked oats topped with spiced apples and a simple crumble.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 2 cups water or milk
- 1 large apple, diced
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons rolled oats (for topping)
- 1 tablespoon cold butter, cut into small pieces
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Combine 1 cup oats and water or milk in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally until cooked, about 5 to 7 minutes.
- While the oats cook, prepare the apples: In a separate small pan, combine the diced apple, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook over medium heat until the apples soften slightly, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
- Prepare the crumble topping: In a small bowl, mix the flour, 2 tablespoons of oats, and cold butter using your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- To serve, divide the cooked oatmeal into bowls. Top each serving with the spiced apples. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the apples.
- If desired, you can lightly toast the crumble topping in a dry pan for 2 minutes before sprinkling, or serve as is.
Notes
- Use any milk alternative you prefer for the oats.
- For a sweeter dish, increase the brown sugar slightly.
- You can prepare the apple mixture ahead of time.
