- 1 box (15.25 oz) white cake mix
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 3 large egg whites
- Red and blue food coloring
- 2 cans (16 oz each) vanilla frosting
- Fresh strawberries and blueberries for decoration
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Prepare cake mix according to package directions, using water, oil, and egg whites.
- Divide batter evenly into three bowls. Leave one bowl plain. Add several drops of red food coloring to the second bowl and mix until evenly colored. Add several drops of blue food coloring to the third bowl and mix until evenly colored.
- Pour the plain batter into one prepared pan and the red batter into the other prepared pan. Bake according to package directions or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- If you have a third pan, pour the blue batter into it and bake. If not, wash and prepare one of the used pans and bake the blue batter after the other cakes have cooled and been removed.
- Once all cakes are completely cool, level the tops if necessary.
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand. Spread about one-third of the vanilla frosting over the top.
- Place the second cake layer on top of the first layer. Spread another third of the frosting over the top.
- Place the third cake layer on top. Spread the remaining frosting over the top and sides of the cake, creating a smooth surface.
- Decorate the top of the cake to resemble an American flag. Use blueberries to form a rectangle in the upper left corner. Slice strawberries and arrange them in stripes on the remaining surface.
- Chill the cake for at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Ensure cakes are completely cool before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
- For a cleaner look, you can use a piping bag to apply the frosting.
